In an effort to scale up Electricity access especially in rural areas, government has launched the new Electricity Access Scale-UP Project (EASP) and the Electricity Connection Policy (ECP) in Bukomero sub-country Kiboga District.
The launch was officiated by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Can. Ruth Nakanbirwa under the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited.
Speaking to the local gathering, Nankabirwa told the public that the funds were secured from the World Bank under the EASP project and is aimed at adding 900,000 new customers to the National grid, something she said will enhance the reliability and affordability of electricity supply in the country and also help eradicate environmental degradation through reduction of cutting down of trees for firewood and charcoal burning.
“With this commissioning, we reaffirm our commitment to the National Development Plan IV (NDP IV) and the NRM Manifesto, lighting up communities, fostering inclusive development, enabling businesses to thrive, supporting social services like schools and health centres and ultimately transforming livelihoods across the district and the nation,’’ Can Nankabirwa stated.
She rallied the community to embrace this initiative because it’s cheaper for the household to get lighted up and only needs to pay UGX 30,000 if the house is wired up.
