Food Prices Surge -UBOS

Kampala recorded the highest Inflation levels compared to other regions in the country.

The rising level of inflation is a concern for Ugandans especially those living in urban areas as prices for food staffs go up, cost of living also increases.

According to the past periods, the September Inflation is the highest in the last nine months, a situation explained by rising food crop and related item prices.

While addressing reporters at the presentation of September30th, 2025 Consumer Price Indices, and Inflation, Aliziki K. Lubega the Director of Economic Statistics at Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) revealed that annual Food Crops and related items Inflation increased to 7.4 percent in the year ending September 2025 from 3.0 percent in August 2025.

Whereas the Annual Core Inflation registered 4.0 percent in the year ending September 2025 compared to 4.1percent recorded in the year ended August 2025.

The Director attributed this to a high increase in prices of Food Crops such as Matooke, Tomatoes, Fresh Leafy Vegetables, Onions, Pineapples and Mangoes, whose respective prices increased tremendously in September, 2025. 

According to Aliziki, Annual Headline Inflation for Food Crops and Related Items increased from 3.0 percent in August 2025 to 7.4 percent in September 2025 while for Energy Fuel and Utilities decreased from 1.1 percent in August 2025 to -0.1 percent in September 2025.

Analysis by geographical areas indicate that Kampala High Income group registered the highest Inflation at 5.7 percent for the year ended September 2025 compared to 5.3 percent recorded in August 2025. This was driven by annual Food and Non- Alcoholic Beverages who’s Inflation increased to 9.1 percent.

Construction Sector Inflation is not worrying because it slightly only by 0.1 from 0.6 percent registered in July 2025 to 0.7 % in August 2025. This is attributed to the Annual Construction Sector Inflation of Specialized Construction Activities which was registered at 0.7 percent for the year ended August 2025. Items like Electrical, plumbing and other construction installation activities also registered double increase from 0.7 percent in July 2025 to 1.5 percent in August 2025.
