The Uganda Police has expressed readiness to deliver a peaceful election situation for the January 15, 2026 general elections despite strong opposition and civil society critics.

While addressing reporters in a weekly security briefing on Monday, 12 January 2026, at Police headquarters in Naguru, the forces’ Chief Political Commissar, AIGP Ubolda Bamunoba highlighted the force’s readiness and measures put in place to safeguard the electoral process.

He, however, warned the voters to stay away after casting their votes for their respective candidates to avoid commotion in the voting arena.

“We are ready to deliver peaceful crime free and credible elections for all levels. There’s no justification for the public to engage in criminal acts in the name of elections,’’ AIGP Bamunoba warned.

“Police and her sister security agencies like UPDF and the Prison forces have deployed heavily to ensure peace and deter criminal activities from occurring.’’ He said.

“ Its only through peace that we can protect and exercise our democracy. Clean leadership is born of clean conduct and high standards of discipline.’’

He also urged the public not to get scared of the heavy deployments, especially in urban centres,s saying it a normal routine, specifically in periods of election, because there are errant individuals who want to disrupt peace due to their selfishness interest.

Bamunoba noted that the police have tightened measures compared to previous elections, including enhanced personnel training, induction, sensitisation, and improved equipment.
