Although President Museveni Launched Life Style Audit on Public service Officer as a means of combating corruption in the country, curbing of the vice is still farfetched due to government low funding to the Inspectorate of Government Office.
The IGG Betty Kamya informed reporters in a press conference held at Uganda Media Centre on July 11th ,2025 that due to syndicate by the errant lower and middle public officials, making hard for her office to catch the thieves.
“ We face a challenge of syndicate by the joiner and middle public officers because they want all to enjoy the share of what has been swindled from government coffers,’’ Kamya explained.
Kamya also said, “ it’s difficult to win corruption cases in court because adducing evidence that under pins the offenders.’’
She also said President Okayed life style audit on government officials but cautioned her to do it with great care because such people can decide to take the money outside the county something that may hamper economic growth due to capital freight.
According to the IGG, Uganda losses UGX 10 trillion annually inform of non and under declaration of income by the tax payer, environmental degradation, procumbent and ghost payrolls and physical cash as well.
This amount of funds can effectively service all the parishes we have in the country and each according to Hon. Kamya would get UGX 1 billion each in terms of parish development model.
The inspectorate has investigated and concluded a total of 2,218 during Kamya’s era of these 1,204 errant public officials from Ministries, Departments and Agences and from Local governments were involved.
In the process the IG recovered cash of UGX 6,819,829, 695 from proceeds of corruption while the conviction rate stands at 40.6% at the Anti- Corruption Court, and 94.7% at the leadership Code Tribunal.
Way Forward
To curb down corruption, the IGG call on citizens to help in unmasking of corruption tendencies. The Inspectorate of Government has also embarked on training some citizens within their respective spaces to be ambassadors.
This approach, Kamya explained that it focuses on prevention through advocacy, education and community mobilization.
