National Unity Platform (NUP) head of leadership training school, Doreen Kaija has been remanded to prison over participation in unlawful military drills.
Online Medium on Sunday reported her missing but police confirmed her arrest on Monday and was arraigned to courts and remanded.
Grade one magistrate, Damalie Agumaasimwe of Kawempe Court on Tuesday afternoon charged Kaija for participating in unlawful military drills, an offence committed in February, 2025.
NUP stalwart was also accused of starting and engaging in the party’s School of Leadership without a license, which the government prosecutor alleged that it contravenes the Education Act. The other count was conspiracy to commit a crime, linked to the same unlawful military drills.
However Kaija denied all charges and she was remanded to Luzira Prison until September 29, 2025 when she will be brought to court again to defend herself.
Police Spokeperson ACP Rusoke Kituuma while speaking to reporters on Monday warned NUP leadership to stop alleging kidnap of their members saying that police is making lawful arrest of those suspected to have committed offenses.
“ The NUP members who were arrested by police violated the Military Pen code when they engaged in the military drills. We have so far arrest 10 and committed them to court,’’ He said.
He further said, “ the law offender has no right decide who they should be arrested, police have discretion to call or arrest anyone but the suspect can’t dictate on how he or she should be arrested, he asserted.’’
He also revealed that police can committee the suspect to court even without a police statement because it’s a duty of the accuser to adduce evidence.
Rusoke also said that police will arrest more suspects in connection with the unlawful military drills but declined to mention the total number of those on wanted list even though they were many.
