Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Executive Director Sharifa Buzeki has highlighted the projects that have been completed and work in progress for the year ended 2025. Among the things she has done in her tenure of close to one year, she has been able to acquire another land for waste management, remove roundabouts, replace them with floodlights and construct roads
In a press conference she addressed at KCCA headquarters in Kampala, Buzeki said she inherited immediate challenges in January 2025 when she assumed office for instance Kiteezi tragedy that claimed scores and the garbage management crisis, completion of phase I of Philip Omondi Stadium
The Executive Director said KCCA has been able to mitigate such challenges and the Kiteezi victims have just been compensated but the remaining ones have not submitted their documents and account numbers.
She revealed that a total of UGX 4.3 billion was released by the Ministry of Finance, and out of over 90 households, 75 have been compensated fully. She, however, warned the recipients to be aware of opportunities who may cone them, claiming that they have helped to have the money disbursed to their accounts.

Buzeki said that KCCA has already procured 230 acres of Landfill in Buyala, in Mpigi District, which is going to be used to initiate a modern integrated waste management system which will help move away from the traditional way of handling garbage in the city. She also said that five roundabouts have been removed and reconstructed with installed floodlights, which has eased traffic congestion and now takes motorists 4 minutes per kilometre.
“In our one-year tenure, we have been able to enhance waste management from 53% to 63% and next financial year, when recycling starts, we will improve further. We have also rehabilitated 10 acres of Kiteezi, courtesy of USA funding of $1 million and reached out to 133,000 residents, sensitizing them on modern waste management,’’ Buzeki said.
On the roads, she said that 80km of roads are under reconstruction and rehabilitation and some are near completion for example, Wamala, Old Mubende and Luwafu roads. 19.5 km (15 roads) have been completed and Kayemba Bridge in Katwe, Makindye Division, is 95% complete.
According to the KCCA Director, 87 km of roads will be covered in the next 3 years, is earmarked to cost UGX 550 billion. The Authority have also been able to streamline markets where stalls have been allocated to vendors on the basis of one vendor one stall, and all vendors in the 17 government markets have been registered.
Revenue collection have also improved in the first six months of the fiscal year, where out of the 132 billion annual target, 69 billion have so far been collected as of December 17th, 2025. The Director attributed this to the taxpayers’ compliance, reduced leakages and tax education.
Challenges
The Director highlighted challenges that need to be mitigated, for instance, the limited number of waste collection trucks, which are only 34 serving 130 parishes. She asked the government to increase the funding in the next financial year. There’s also wetland encroachment, but KCCA is working with NEMA to curb the vice.
