NIRA Warns Ugandans on fraudsters, billions are lost so far

Ugandans have been conned billions of shilling while trying to get National IDs and other government document very quickly and in the process they end up being cheated.

The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has alerted Ugandans to fraudulent online platforms and middlemen claiming to provide “express” National ID services, cautioning that such offers are scams designed to steal money and personal information.

According to NIRA, websites like ugfinder.com have been charging unsuspecting citizens under the guise of fast-tracking National ID applications. The site lists contacts including WhatsApp +

Ollama also revealed that many Ugandans have been cheated billions of shilling but she declined to tell the exact amount because investigations are still ongoing.

NIRA reaffirmed its commitment to providing services safely, transparently, and securely, urging the public to always seek information from authentic sources.

She urged Ugandans to rely only on official NIRA platforms to protect their personal data.      

The Authority clarified that the “express service” is not yet operational, despite a fee of Shs300,000 being gazetted.

Any requests for money for this service are fraudulent. All genuine payments are made through the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) and never in cash or through individuals.

NIRA advised citizens to apply for IDs early, warning that last-minute rushes create opportunities for scammers.

“Remember, both the giver and receiver of a bribe commit a crime. Protect your data and yourself,” the authority said.

The agency also thanked Ugandans participating in ongoing mass enrollment and card collection, noting that operations continue at the parish level and encouraging parents to register their children during school holidays.
