First 57 Days of UEDCL Marred with Power Instability

Uganda Electricity Distribution Company (UEDCL) gives an account of the first 57 days since government taking over power distribution, announces completion of replacement of 116 transformers.

Government under its corporate body UEDCL officially nationalised UMEME after 20 years in operation and now it’s trying to rectify the anomalies.

While addressing reporters as a way of updating consumers at Media Centre in Kampala on May 28th, 2025, the Head of Corporate and stakeholders Affairs Jonan Kiiza said that government inherited depilated networking and they have commenced with replacing faulty transformers.  

‘’ We have so far replace 116 faulty transformers out of 518 we inherited at the time of taking over and we hope this will enhance power reliability in the different parts of the country. The new transformers we have put in place have a capacity ranging from 25 kva to 1 mva,’’ Kiiza stated.

He also commented on the increased road shading which have left some complaining about the service since government taking over. Kiiza however said that this challenge has been accelerated by the rampant vandalism on the infrastructures put in place.

‘’ Since we took over, we have experience nine incidences of vandalism in areas of Mityana, Nakasongola up to Cafu and this has greatly tarnished our brand, we call up patriotic Ugandans to fight this evil with us by giving us timely information using our toll free lines like 0800385385.’’ He said.

Kiiza also said that UEDCL is all most through with recruiting workers and so far 96% on the 2,712 needed and have placed after receiving training from the company’s training centre that was opened up in Njeru, Jinja.

According Kiiza, UEDCL will connect over 225,000 applicants inherited on the grid before the end of 2025 using US $ 74 million allocated by government.
