NIRA : ID Registration Hit 3.5 Million

The National Identification cards registration has hit 3.5 million just in a month as more people in different parts of the country continue every day to cue up for enrolment. Late week the total was 2.5 m.

Buikwe  District NIRA registrar Claire Ollama revealed the figures while giving and update on the exercise so far on behalf of the authority at Naguru Police Headquarters.

Ollam also stressed the need for parents to register their children saying its very necessary because it will help in solving disputes that arise especially on the inheritance of property when parents pass on. She also said that this registration is also very important because it is a pre-requisite for access of government medical services, admissions in government institutions of higher learning.

“    In the event of death of the father,  one will not need to go for DNA as long as the father had registered his children with the NIRA unless the child in question is being claimed by another parent.’’ Ollama said.

She also rubbished rummors by people that NINs are altered where a female person mistaken is given that of a male, stressing that there`s no specific NIN for the different gender, that the only gender distinction feature occur on the identity cards were its marked Female for women and Male for men.

Ollama  also said that the registrars ask a lot of questions for purposes data protection and also to know specifically who are Ugandans especially when its comes to tribes which cuts across EAC region like the Bakonjo, Samia, and Banyarwada to mention but a few.
