Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) monthly release indicate that the general price level for food crops and related items for March, 2026 has lowered from 0.4% to 0.3% in February 2026 but the Fuel and utilities inflation for March increased to 1.0% from 0.4% in February.
While the Monthly Headline Inflation for March 2026 increased by 0.1% compared to 0.3% increase registered in February 2026.
According to Juliet Nakayenga, UBOS Principal Statistician, the Annual Inflation for the 12 months to March 2026 is 2.8 percent compared to 2.9 percent registered in the year ending February 2026 and the Annual Core Inflation was registered at 2.9% in the year ending March 2026 compared to 3.0 % recorded in the year ended February 2026.
Nakayenga attributed a general fall in prices of food crops to the lowering prices of Maize flour, dried fish, live chicken, refined oil, Fresh milk, passion fruits, Pineapples, and Onions.
However, Annual Energy and Utilities Inflation increased to 4.1 percent in the year ending March 2026 compared to 2.7 percent recorded in the year ended February 2026. This is attributed to Annual Solid Fuels Inflation that increased to 10.5% in the year ending March 2026. Particularly Charcoal whose rate of price change in 8.1% compared to 6.0% registered in the year ended February 2026.
Meanwhile, the Construction Sector also registered overall increase in inflation at 0.1 percent in February compared to a stable rate of 0.0 percent registered for the year ended January 2026.
Speaking to reporters at the joint press release, the Irene Namugambe Musiitwa the Principal Statistician said that the main drivers for the Specialised Construction Activities Inflation was the Demolition and Site Preparation. She revealed that Electricity, Plumbing and other Construction Installation Activities Inflation was recorded at 0.3 % for the year ended February 2026 compared to 0.1 % recorded for the year ended January 2026.
