AFCON Update: Uganda will be ready by December 2026

The Conderation of Africa Football Association (CAF) officials have completed the second inspection of the hosting Stadia and has commended the work completed so far 

The second inspection occurred on Tuesday, September 1,2026 the officials checked Mandela National Stadium which  is currently under remodeling and they ordered for separation of entrance for Journalists from that of the VIP and VVIP.

According to the Chairperson Local Organising Committee Dr. Denis Mugimba, remodeling is still ongoing at Nambole stadium where a bridge connecting the VIP and VVIP parking yard direct to their separated entance.

Speaking to the reporters while giving an update on the readiness Dr. Mugimba said that remodeling of Mandela National Stadium will be completed by end of December, 2026.

“The completion of remodeling of Mandela National Stadium will occur at the end of December, 2026 and UPDF will hand it over to government, ” Dr. Mugimba reaffirmed.

Uganda presented three Stadia for hosting AFCON 2027 matches, the newly completed Hoima City Stadium, Mandela National Stadium, and the stand by Akibua stadium in Lira District

Government released UGX 135.7billion for construction and remodeling of  training facilities. Hoima City Stadium anext was allocated UGX 13 billion, Masindi 22.2, Sir Tito Winyi 18.6, Pece  took 13.3 Kyambogo 16.6, FUFA Kadiba 5.2, while Mandela took the lion’s share of 48.8.

Meanwhile the Local organising committee according to Dr. Mugimba has already pre-qualified 650 Local firm out of a total of 850 which had so far applied via online.

“The window for pre-qualification is still open , registered businesses can continue to apply  via online and the committee will hand their applications,” Dr Mugimba revealed.

He further said, “CAF opened tendering on its website and local businesses with from the host countries can now apply. Such businesses should be able to exhibit local content promotion but maintaining high quality.”

” The scope of services and products needed is enormous which gives an opportunity for organised businesses to reap big, ” he said.

The 2027 AFCON will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania and will commence on June 19 and end on July17, 2027
