Kasambya County MP David Kabanda attacks the Buganda Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga accusing him of siding with people who utter hate speeches during which are eventually publicized on online media
Kabanda publicly criticized Katikkiro Mayiga while addressing reporters at his new office along Nakasero Road in Kampala on July 9, 2026, questioning his recent appeal to authorities to stop arresting individuals for hate speech.

He warned that words are highly destructive and stressed that hate speeches must not be tolerated because these can cause genocide. He cited out the example of the 1994 Rwanda genocide and what is currently occurring in South Africa attributing it to hate speeches.

“ Hate speeches are incredibly dangerous and can easily lead to severe unrest, cite an exampla of the 1994 Rwandan genocide as a historical of what unchecked rhetoric can cause,” Kabanda said.

Kabanda publicly pushed back against the Katikkiro’s call for leniency, questioning if the Katikkiro truly grasps the severity of the situation. Reminding Mayiga of his own message.

The Kasambya county legislator noted that the Katikkiro himself frequently reminds the public that the Kabaka and Buganda are for everyone, and argued that fighting hate speech aligns with that inclusive philosophy.

“The Tongue Kills”. Kabanda concluded his statement by asserting that “what kills is not the gun nor spear but the tongue,” emphasizing that the authorities are right to fight the issue.
