Following the fatal road traffic accident that occurred earlier this morning, 10 July 2026, at approximately 6:46 a.m. at Namumira Village in Mukono District, police have established that the crash involved a Friendship Coaches bus, registration number UAU 123Q (blue in colour), and a Uganda Railways train.

According to the statement released by Kampala Metropolitan Spokesperson Racheal Kawala, preliminary information indicates that the bus had been hired by Mwebaze High School, located in Bakka, Kakiri, Wakiso District, to transport students and teachers for a study tour to Jinja District. At the time of the accident, it is alleged the bus was carrying approximately 100 passengers.

She further said that the findings also indicate that the bus was travelling at a high speed and allegedly failed to stop at the designated railway crossing as required by traffic regulations before attempting to cross the railway line. It is alleged that the bus entered the crossing, collided with the oncoming train, and subsequently veered off the road.

“One female adult, identified as the wife of the school’s head teacher, died at the scene. Several other occupants sustained injuries and were evacuated to Mukono General Referral Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment,” the statement reads in parts.

Kawala revealed that the bus driver fled the scene and is currently on the run. Efforts to identify and apprehend the driver are ongoing.

She also confirmed that police are working towards establishing the identities of all the victims and to determine the full circumstances surrounding the accident and she will reveal the whole report when investigations are concluded.
